Archives
A large and essential part of any historical desktop study into UXO from WWII consists of detailed archival research. Reliable risk analysis begins with understanding the historical military context of a project area, including bombings, artillery activity, defensive positions, ammunition storage, and post-war clearance operations.
Bombs Away has developed a strong international archival research capability. We maintain a dedicated research team working in NARA II, College Park, Maryland, USA, continuously identifying, reviewing and digitizing relevant military records for use in international UXO projects. This allows us to access original mission reports, bomb damage analysis records, operational maps and aerial imagery directly from primary sources.
In addition, we hold extensive data and documentation relating to international locations from German, American, Canadian and British archives, including operational records, aerial reconnaissance photography and military engineering documentation. This enables cross-referencing between Allied and Axis sources, significantly increasing the reliability and depth of our historical analysis.
For specific project locations, we also consult local, regional and national archives to ensure that locally documented wartime activities and post-war clearance records are fully incorporated into our analysis.
By combining international primary sources with local archival research, we provide a comprehensive and a well-substantiated historical foundation for UXO risk evaluation worldwide.
